Canada has amended the Hazardous Products Regulations to modernize WHMIS and make hazard communication clearer. As part of these changes, our WHMIS course has now also changed. Some of the new updates include:
Course name of “WHMIS 2015” is now outdated. The system is simply called “WHMIS."
New hazard class. “Chemicals Under Pressure” has been added for products that pose unique risks when stored or handled.
“Flammable Aerosols” is now simply “Aerosols”. There is also a new category for non-flammable aerosols.
“Flammable Gasses” has now been split into 1A (Easily ignitable) and 1B (less dangerous).
Health Hazard Refinements. Criteria for reproductive toxicity and water-activated toxicants were corrected for better accuracy.
Improved SDS Requirements. Safety Data Sheets now include information elements to make hazard communication clearer.
These changes aim to make hazard classifications more precise and easier to understand. In order to meet these new requirements, labels and SDS’s need to reflect the new hazard classes and categories, training materials are revised, and the changes need to be communicated.
